Celebrate Cabernet Sauvignon Day!

Hello, my Life Lover friends, August is here and with that comes a day that I particularly like… Cabernet day 🙂 Yes! As you read it, this delicious red wine is celebrated every Thursday before Labor Day in the U.S. and this year falls on the 31st of august. So, for this edition I bring you information about Cabernet Sauvignon, a bit of story behind it, organic wines, and how to pair it.

Bottles of wines.

Before I start talking about wine, let’s not forget that in many countries you need to be over 18 or 21 years old to drink any alcohol, and the consumption of wine such be done in a responsible manner at any age.

Let’s start with the basic, cabernet sauvignon it’s a type of grape, one of the most known in the world, because it’s grown in many countries, due to being easy to grow in different climates.

We can find across the beautiful Australia in the McLaren Vale and Margaret River, in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay, all the way to Canada, going down through Napa Valley in California, and even further down to Chile in Colchagua and Maipo valley, going back to Europe, to our Spanish and French friends, just to name a few.

This is a new variety of grape; it was a cross between white grape Sauvignon blanc and red grape Cabernet franc in the 17th century in the southwestern of France (another thing to be thankful for to our French friends).

Regarding its flavours and smell, these two things are very important when we talk about wines. I’m not a professional viticulturist, but this is something that is mentioned in every wine tasting I have attended. Cabernet Sauvignon’s smell and flavour can have a slight difference depending on where the grapes are grown and the winemaking process, but in general has a dark fruity flavour (blackberry, black cherry and clack currant or also known as cassis. We might also find a few with a note of spice, wood, and vanilla (from ageing in oak barrels).

Another significant thing is that Cabernet Sauvignon, also known as cab sav or just cab, is a dry type of wine. What does this mean? In simple words, when a wine is dry, it means it is more acid and less sweet.

Organic wines.

An organic wine is a wine made with grapes grown in accordance with the principles of organic farming, which means that it excludes the uses of artificial chemicals for pesticides and fertilizers. Another characteristic of an organic wine is that it doesn’t use preservatives, specifically sulphur, during the winemaking process. All of this makes it more environmentally friendly than other winemaking process.

Research shows that organic wines are growing slowly and are still hard to find but not impossible. The best way to find them is to ask in your local bottle shop or a local winery website. They will always have a few options for organic wines that you can try, and cabernet sauvignon is not the exception.

Let’s find them the perfect partner

Now, the fun part, how do we pair our beloved Cab sav? According to my research, acidic wines should be paired with acidic food: a salad with red fruits or with a fruit dressing, mushroom risotto, bake potatoes, vegan mac and cheese, eggplant Parmesan, and my favourite a ratatouille.

If your thing is cheese, try to pair it with a vegan brie or sharp cheddar. A vegan cheese board with a few plums, cherries, figs and blackberries will be perfect for a date with your partner, a friend or just with you and your favourite book.

Let us know how you pair this delicious wine by tagging us in social media when you are celebrating Cabernet sauvignon day.

Until next time!
