As I journeyed from Paris on a high-speed train, the anticipation of discovering this captivating city grew. Within hours, I immersed myself in Bordeaux’s easy-going atmosphere, embracing its distinct “à la bordelaise” way of life. With a history dating back to Roman times, Bordeaux thrived as a trading hub on the Garonne River, its port connecting the city to the world during the prosperous 18th and 19th centuries. The grand architecture and lavish mansions testify to this bygone prosperity, enticing you to explore the city’s remarkable heritage.
Hopping on the tram is the best way to get around— it’s clean, cheap, and easy! Boat rides along the Garonne River offer picturesque views of the city and give way to nature and the vineyards of Medoc. It’s almost impossible to speak of Bordeaux without mentioning Rue Sainte-Catherine. This legendary pedestrian shopping street stretches nearly a mile with many shops, cafes, and restaurants. Bordeaux’s commitment to an active lifestyle shines through physical activities, natural beauty, and cultural events. Whether cycling through charming streets, sitting in an outdoor cafe, or engaging in cultural activities, residents and visitors alike relish a fulfilling lifestyle.
Beyond Bordeaux’s renowned wine culture, the city captivates with its historical landmarks and culinary delights. With its blend of old-world charm and modern allure, Bordeaux will long linger in your memory.
So, join me as we embark on a Bordeaux adventure, discovering the top 10 reasons that make this city an extraordinary destination—beyond its epic wine.
Vibrant Café Culture
Indulge in Bordeaux’s vibrant café culture, where the heart of the city beats to the rhythm of cozy gatherings and leisurely conversations. Nestled throughout the historic center, charming restaurants invite you to relax and kick back with a few tasty hors d’oeuvres to tantalize your tastebuds.
It’s heaven to settle into an outdoor table with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Every sip and bite becomes a sensory experience surrounded by the lively ambience that defines Bordeaux’s café scene.
Bordeaux is a Stunning Walkable City
Embark on an enjoyable ramble through Bordeaux, where stunning landscapes invite exploration. Mesmerizing architectural marvels grace every corner as you stroll along the narrow streets. The city’s efficient transportation system and pedestrian-friendly avenues allow you to freely wander Bordeaux’s gorgeous green spaces and uncover hidden gems. The charming Jardin Public’s manicured gardens and soothing fountains are an excellent stop for a low-key ambience.
Gentle Garonne River
A walk along the Garonne River will put you in touch with Bordeaux’s 2,000-year-old history as a port city. Wander along the waterfront where nature and city vibes intertwine. The Quais de Bordeaux is a panoramic promenade that offers sweeping vistas, open spaces, and inviting cafes with outdoor tables. I enjoyed a leisurely morning stroll but wish I could have taken a long bike ride beside the river.

Bordeaux is a Foodie Heaven
Bordeaux’s culinary tapestry reflects a love for the land, delectable tastes, and an explosion of flavors. Food becomes culinary works of art, celebrating regional traditions of terroir and heritage. Locals savor seasonal bounties, revealing the sun’s warmth in juicy tomatoes, crisp greens, and earthy root vegetables. Each plate is an artistic creation, crafted with the region’s finest ingredients from nearby fields, vineyards, and the Bay of Arcachon. Indulge in highly prized briny oysters from pristine ocean depths. One of Bordeaux’s most iconic sweet treats is the canelé. These small, caramelized pastries have a soft custard-like interior with a dark, caramelized crust—I dare you to eat just one.
Bordeaux’s Architectural Heritage
Bordeaux’s architecture celebrates human creativity and the city’s rich heritage—
a stunning blend of timeless elegance and breathtaking beauty. Gothic cathedrals soar towards the heavens, their spires gracefully piercing the sky. Meticulously preserved 18th-century buildings stand as proud witnesses to the city’s illustrious past, adorned with ornamented facades. The fusion of medieval, Renaissance, and classical styles presents a visual feast. The spotlight falls on Place de la Bourse, a testament to Bordeaux’s opulence; the regal columns, sculptures, and proportions exude grandeur. Decorated in sumptuous blue, white, and gold – the colors of royalty – the Grand-Théâtre, an 18th-century architectural masterpiece by Victor Louis, is now the stage for the Bordeaux National Opera.
The Miroir d’Eau
The Miroir d’Eau in Bordeaux is a mesmerizing attraction that symbolizes the city’s connection to water. This installation, consisting of granite slabs covered in a thin layer of water, is the largest reflecting pool in the world. Situated in front of the beautiful Place de la Bourse, visitors often wait for the water mist that occurs every 15 minutes. Walking through this mist is a perfect way to cool down in the summer heat.

Cité du Vin
A wine lover’s haven, the iconic landmark immerses you in the world of wine.
Discover its rich history and culture at this unique cultural center. The permanent exhibition takes you on a captivating journey through viticulture, winemaking techniques, and the global significance of wine. It is an architectural marvel, resembling a glistening wine decanter. The building swirls skyward, its shimmering glass and aluminum panels catching the sun. Don’t miss the fabulous wine bar on the top floor at sunset, with a panoramic city view.
Bordeaux’s Active Lifestyle
Immerse yourself in Bordeaux’s vibrant rhythm, where an active and exhilarating lifestyle awaits at every turn. The city pulsates with outdoor adventures and sporting possibilities, beckoning you to embrace the electrifying energy that fills the air. Renting a bike is an easy and inexpensive way to explore the city. Scenic running and walking routes run along the riverbanks and throughout the lush parks and the historic center. Beyond the river, the mighty Atlantic Ocean beckons with thrilling water sports, from sailing to kayaking.
Bordeaux’s Museums Are Glimpses into History
Bordeaux’s museums are fascinating gateways to the worlds of art, history, and culture. My favorite? The Musée d’Aquitaine is a rich tapestry of regional antiquity and civilization. Each artifact whispers tales of bygone eras.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux covers a panorama of European Art from the 15th to the 20th century. The CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art of Bordeaux is a stunning modern art museum. Located in the Les Chartrons district, the museum is housed in a former colonial goods warehouse.
Fun Festivals in Bordeaux
The biennial Bordeaux Wine Festival celebrates the region’s renowned wines with tastings, workshops, and events. In odd-numbered years, the Bordeaux Fête le Vin enchants wine enthusiasts with tastings, cultural spectacles, and a grand parade along the Garonne River. The annual Bordeaux International Festival of Arts showcases contemporary creativity, while Bordeaux’s Rock Festival delivers electrifying rock concerts.
