Me and My Diamond Book Review: A Children’s Travel Adventure

Children’s books have a way of bringing us back to when we were young. I could even dare to say they bring out our inner child to play. Which we could all use a bit more of. Now, if you mix that with beautiful illustrations, you have a truly captivating book. That’s exactly what Me and My Diamond by Belinda Jane Robinson is all about.

I came across it accidentally while browsing for a gift for a six-year-old. The parent approved it even before they had read it. When I started flipping through its pages, I could immediately see why. It’s the perfect balance between a delicate collector’s edition looking cover (with small stones included), excellent paper and print quality, a heartfelt story, and fantastic illustrations by Jenny Everett.

This picture book tells a story that could be described as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe meets every Disney tale where good prevails over evil—with perhaps a touch of Eat, Pray, Love and even a hint of a geography book. Me and My Diamond simply hits every mark.

Through its pages, we follow Molly and Joe and their beloved grandmother, Binny, who comes to stay while their parents are away. Together, they embark on a seven-day journey across the seven continents. Along the way, wise animal guides reveal the meaning of seven rainbow jewels, teaching them self-love, how to embrace their uniqueness, and the inner strength they carry—the Diamond in their Heart.

The author brings a distinctive, engaging energy that is immediately felt in the book. A natural traveller, she began her career as a fashion model before training as an SRN nurse at the Middlesex Hospital in London. She later opened fashion boutiques in London and Norwich, then retrained as a reflexologist and launched a company creating ‘chill-out’ relaxation spaces for exhibitions and corporate events across the UK and Europe.

Now based in Kent, Belinda is expanding on the book’s themes in collaboration with education professionals, developing workshops and extended learning resources focused on wellbeing and aligned with the curriculum.
